The newly opened Illinois Tollway DesPlaines Oasis in 1959

This June 1959 photograph of the newly opened Illinois Toll Highway Commission, Des Plaines Oasis clearly depicts the commission’s preference for open land on which construct their facility.  The view is looking northwest with Route 83/Elmhurst Road in the background.  Many things have changed since this photograph was taken, a current shot would not include any plowed fields and this section of the tollway would contain more traffic at 3:00 AM in the morning than appears in this late afternoon photograph.  The tank farms in the background are still in place but the borrow pits have been filled in and developed.  Since they were probably not spring fed these particular pits did not become the focal point of upscale housing that occurred with many of the tollway’s other borrow pit’s.  (Illinois Tollway archives)
